Things went from bad to worse for the former No. 1 middleweight contender. Longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran, Demian Maia, will be out of mixed martial arts (MMA) action for the foreseeable future as the submission wizard is currently battling a severe bone infection in his shoulder. According to a recent report from UFC Tonight, Maia obtained the infection, osteomyelitis, in his right clavicle bone which is usually caused by bacteria.

Initially, Demian suffered a shoulder sprain which forced him out of last weekend’s (Aug. 23, 2014) UFC Fight Night 49 event, where he was lined up to take on Mike Pyle in welterweight action. Eventually, the sprain turned into a staph infection which in turn, lead to the bone infection. According to Maia’s manager, Eduardo Alonso, the jiu-jitsu black belt will now have to undergo a six-week treatment of antibiotics which will be given to him through IVs, as well as an oral course.
