Demian Maia will have to win at least one more fight before getting a shot at the UFC welterweight title. And his next opponent is no guaranteed victory.
Maia (24-6) will meet Jorge Masvidal (32-11) at UFC 211 in Dallas on May 13, according to UFC officials on Tuesday. Combate first broke the news of the fight.
Maia has won six consecutive fights, most recently a first-round submission win over former WEC champ and UFC interim champ Carlos Condit on Aug. 27. He’s earned finishes in three of his past four fights and a pair of Performance of the Night bonuses in that stretch as well. The finish of Condit was his 12th career submission win.
While it was expected Maia would be high on the list of candidates for a title shot, the draw between champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 necessitated a rematch, which put Maia on the back burner in the title picture for the foreseeable future.
Masvidal is finally breaking through to the highest level after grinding his way through the sport for years. The American Top Team competitor earned his biggest career victory with a second-round TKO Donald Cerrone in Denver on January 28. That marked his third consecutive victory.
