While his first fight of 2016 was against an opponent he hadn’t originally expected to face, Oklahoma prospect Derrick Adkins was able to overwhelm Jeremiah Jones at FCF 51 and come out with a 73-second first round submission victory.

“Jeremy was a tough local guy, but I don’t think he matched up well with me,” Adkins told MMAWeekly.com. “I went in there and the stand-up wasn’t feeling great, so I took him down, and when he came back up I got a d’arce choke and actually finished it standing.”

Coming off a loss to Cliff Harris to close out 2015, Adkins was more than happy to get back on the winning track with his victory over Jones.

“The loss bothered me a little bit,” admitted Adkins. “With the size difference and everything and a really bad stoppage with the cut under my eye, but to get back in the cage and get a win and knock off all the little demons from my head was good. I needed it.”

On Friday in Catoosa, Okla., Adkins (6-2) returns to Legacy FC in a rematch of his last amateur fight when he takes on Daryl Wilson (2-0) in a main card 155-pound bout.

“Back then I was getting better at striking but wasn’t great,” Adkins said. “I took (Wilson) down and controlled him well during that fight. I think that’s an option this time, depending on how the stand-up goes, but I feel I’m better than him all-around.

“I can play around with this fight and see where I want it to happen and where I feel more comfortable. I think I’ll just control the cage and take it where I feel most comfortable.”
