LAS VEGAS — Derrick Lewis is focusing on his fight with Roy Nelson, but he’ll also have an eye on UFC 200.
“The Black Beast,” who is rapidly becoming a fan favorite, is interested in taking on the winner of the big night’s co-main event fight between Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt.
“Brock Lesnar is not a fighter,” Lewis said Tuesday at open workouts. “He’s scared to be hit. It depends on how this fight goes. If my fight goes the way that I want it to go Thursday, I would like the winner.”
Lewis (15-4, 1 NC) meets Nelson in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: dos Anjos vs. Alvarez on Thursday at MGM Grand Garden Arena. UFC 200 will only be a short Uber ride away at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday, but Lewis doesn’t plan on being in attendance to watch.
“You know how much the tickets is?” Lewis said. “Sh*t. I’ll probably be at a bar around here watching it. I’m not paying that much for damn tickets.”
Considering his thoughts on Lesnar, Lewis is picking Hunt in the heavyweight clash. Lesnar, who still performs for WWE, has not fought since a 2011 loss to Alistair Overeem and there are plenty of questions about how we’ll be in his return. Hunt, meanwhile, has been one of the top heavyweights in the world over the last few years.
“I like Mark,” Lewis said. “He’s just like Roy. He comes out and fights. You know, swing and bang. I’m going with Mark in this one.”
Lewis, 31, asked for the Nelson fight. He campaigned for it. Part of the reason is because he appreciates Nelson’s fighting style. “Big Country” also drums up attention.
