Dillon Danis has broken his silence and has made his first public statement since UFC 229.
The already-infamous post-fight brawl last Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in the aftermath of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fourth-round submission victory over Conor McGregor started when Nurmagomedov jumped over the top of the cage to get at Danis.
According to a report on TMZ.com, multiple people claimed that Danis, a Bellator welterweight and jiu-jitsu standout who was in McGregor’s corner for the bout, called Nurmagmedov “a f*cking Muslim rat” during the bout.
But Danis has vehemently denied the charges. On Wednesday, Danis told ESPN he was part of a smear campaign, and looked forward to having his name cleared by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
“Khabib fans are attempting to smear me in an attempt to justify his actions,” Danis told ESPN. I have never and would never denigrate anyone’s religion. I look forward to the results of the Nevada Gaming Commission [sic]’s investigation which will reject this bulls*it claim and put the blame where it belongs.”
The NAC has held Nurmagomedov’s $2M fight purse as it investigates the near-riot in Las Vegas. No timetable has been set for the investigation’s conclusion.
