Dominick Cruz bashes ‘spineless’ Cody Garbrandt for media approach ahead of UFC 207

When Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight king Dominick Cruz and top contender Cody Garbrandt lock horns at UFC 207 on Dec. 30 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., a new rivalry will be born within the 135-pound division. The two bantamweights have already traded barbs in the media leading up to their matchup, but nothing will be made official until fists fly and leather lands. As for those public barbs, Cruz isn’t impressed at all of Garbrandt’s approach in the media, especially when it comes to their heated clash on the UFC on FOX 22 broadcast earlier this month.

“I kind of blackout when I talk sometimes, but afterwards I realized I had a tactical answer for every idiotic thing he had to say,” said Cruz in a recent interview with FloCombat. “It was funny because you could almost read into everything he was going to say because he’s not a big thinker. He’s the type of guy who has to force everything and there’s no real thought put into anything.

“Everything he says is, ‘I’m stronger, I’m faster, I’m better looking and I’m this and that,’ and that’s gotta work, but it’s like, ‘What’s plan B for you guy?’ I can match him on all those things and more, and since he doesn’t have a plan B I can make him look silly. He really just does that all on his own though.”

Cruz is no stranger to the tactics of Team Alpha Male. He had a storied trilogy with newly retired Urijah Faber and defeated former TAM standout T.J. Dillashaw earlier this year to reclaim his bantamweight crown. But according to Cruz, “No Love” has been the most egregious of them all.

“It actually reminds me of [Urijah] Faber because that was Faber’s tactic,” added Cruz of Garbrandt. “Anytime we had a press conference or a media scrum where we were supposed to exchange points every time I would start talking he would just start screaming nonsense over the top so I couldn’t even say what I wanted to say.

“What you get is me trying to talk and these other people screaming absurd things over top of me and it kills the interview. It’s a spineless, gutless and sad approach that’s very weak.”

Regardless of what has been said in the media, the two will be forced to exchange in close quarters when the cage door shuts on Dec. 30 in Sin City.
