Donald Cowboy Cerrone signs new deal with UFC

Donald Cerrone won’t be trying out free agency.

The long-time lightweight contender, and recently turned welterweight, Cerrone signed an eight-fight deal with the UFC. The news was officially reported by MMA Junkie, and was also confirmed by Cerrone’s management team through Twitter on Thursday.

Cerrone, who had one fight left on his previous UFC contract, decided not to give free agency a try despite the recent trend of fighters fighting out their contract.

‘Cowboy’ last fought this past weekend in the main card of UFC 202, where he defeated top-10 welterweight Rick Story via second-round technical knockout. The long-time lightweight moved up to welterweight earlier this year after failing to seize lightweight gold in December against then champion Rafael dos Anjos. The 33-year-old fighter is 3-0 since moving up to welterweight.

Cerrone has been with the UFC since 2011, and has fought 22 times under the promotion, compiling an impressive record of 18-4. Cerrone has also earned 13 Fight Night bonuses.
