Doo Ho Choi isn’t quite where he needs to be to contend for a Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight title. The 25-year-old South Korean has certainly entered the promotion in fashion — evident by his three first-round knockouts — but Choi is still buried on a deep roster.
Since defeating UFC veteran Thiago Tavares at TUF 23 Finale this past July, “The Korean Superboy” has begun to make his divisional intentions known. In effort to lock down a meaningful bout by the end of 2016, Choi called out perennial contender Cub Swanson in a recent video, titled “Doo Ho Choi wants Cub Swanson so bad!!” released by South Korea sports network SPOTV via Facebook (MMA Junkie).
“I have been watching you since even before I made my UFC debut,” said Choi in the recent video post. “Since my UFC debut, I have won all three fights in style. I think it will be a good fight between the two of us. We both always try to knock out our opponents. I like those types of fighters. Even though my ranking isn’t high now, like you mentioned before, it’s not important whether you fight rookies or top-ranked fighters.
Swanson, currently ranked No. 5 in the UFC Featherweight division, just defeated Japanese veteran Tatsuya Kawajiri via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 92 to win his second-consecutive fight. Since losing to Frankie Edgar and Max Holloway via submission, Swanson has been on a slow track back to title contention. A victory over an up-and-coming striker like Choi would prove Swanson still belongs near the 145-pound elite.
