Eddie Bravo Invitational 12 results: Blanchfield and Macfarlane shine

Erin Blanchfield and Ilima-Lei Macfarlane earn championships at Eddie Bravo Invitational.

When given the opportunity to stand in the spotlight, the women of the Eddie Bravo Invitation delivered an exciting event from start to finish. EBI 12 featured some of the best flyweight competitors in the sport today battling for the EBI title and cash prizes. A four women Combat Jiu Jitsu bracket was also included and was just as compelling as the 16-woman grappling tournament. At the end of the night, Erin Blanchfield and Ilima-Lei Macfarlane were victorious in claiming the grappling and CJJ titles.

Blanchfield displayed a wide range of her Jit Jitsu abilities as she defeated Livia Gluchowska, Katherine Shen and Lila Smadja before facing Gabi McComb in the finals. McComb and Blanchfield battled for position on the feet for nearly six minutes before finally getting the action the floor. Blanchfield scored the takedown but McComb was active with her butterfly guard to keep herself safe. Regulation ended without a submission, forcing an overtime session.

Blanchfield found herself in a very dangerous spot when McComb attempted a neck crank. She somehow fought out of the position and had her opportunity to win in the next overtime session. McComb was unable to get out of the arm weave position in less than 18 seconds which secured the title for Blanchfield to become the first women’s flyweight champion.

Combat Jiu Jitsu was also on display during the event and 6-0 professional fighter, Ilima-Lei Macfarlane took home the title. She defeated Celine Haga and Brooke Mayo to become the first champion of the group.

Mayo and Macfarlane put on a great display of CJJ, battling from many different positions. Macfarlane hit a blast double that almost led to a triangle attempt from Mayo, but worked her way out of the dangerous spot. They continued to exchange attacks in regulation, but the fight went to overtime where Mayo fell victim to a tight triangle which forced her to submit.

Macfarlane didn’t need the overtime portion in the finals as she forced Haga to submit. The finals didn’t involve many of the open-hand strikes that make CJJ so different; but both women were very aggressive in every position.

EBI 12 featured many of the best athletes in the female flyweight division today. At the end of the night there were upsets, quick submissions and last-minute comeback victories throughout the bracket. This event was put forth to showcase the women of competitive grappling and delivered with one of the best events of 2017. The replay is available for viewing on the UFC Fight Pass platform.
