Frankie Edgar doesn’t buy Germaine de Randamie’s reasons for not wanting to fight Cris Cyborg.
Germaine de Randamie is currently the UFC featherweight champion after she beat Holly Holm for the inaugural title last February. Interestingly enough, she and her team have gone on record to say that she doesn’t want to defend her title against long time featherweight queen Cris Cyborg.
The reason given was Cyborg’s 2011 drug test, saying she is a “proven cheater”, and that the decision has “nothing at all to do with my fear.”
Frankie Edgar, who has competed in multiple divisions against much larger men, was asked about the situation and says he doesn’t buy her excuse.
“It’s fear. USADA is in place now,” Edgar said during a recent media scrum. “For me, I would fight whether they’re doing steroids or not. I’m a fighter and that’s why I signed up to do this sport. I guess she had different plans though.”
De Randamie has also stated that she would rather relinquish the featherweight belt and go back down to bantamweight.
“That’s crazy to me. She just doesn’t want to fight Cyborg. That’s what it comes down to. At ‘35, she’s not getting easy fights there either. If I was her, I would at least fight in one more title fight. You never know, you may not get a chance to do that again.”
