Perennial Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight contender Edson Barboza will have another opportunity to separate himself from the seething 155-pound pack when he meets former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez tonight (Sat., July 23, 2016) at UFC on FOX 20 form the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
The Lightweight showdown will serve as the co-main event of the evening, giving the Brazilian the chance to capture victory in front of a huge audience. With a win, Barboza could finally spark the title run that fight fans have been waiting for. But first, “Junior” must get past the precision boxing of Melendez.
“Most guys have a lot of ups and downs in the UFC, especially at 155,” said Barboza about his opponent in a recent interview with FOX Sports. “It’s one of the hardest divisions in the UFC. He’s been at the top for a long, long time. I remember watching this guy at a lot of shows and thinking he’s really good and he’s still one of the best. I know this will be a big challenge and it’s going to be a big war.”
“I want to win but if he gives me one chance to land a strike or a submission, I’m going to finish the fight. That’s what I’m looking for. Just give me one chance and I’m looking to finish the fight.”
Barboza added that a decisive victory over Melendez will land him very close to a title shot. But considering his teammate, Eddie Alvarez, is the current UFC Lightweight champion, things may get interesting if Barboza does in fact earn a golden opportunity.
