Fabio Maldonado’s team is still hopeful that his controversial majority decision loss to Fedor Emelianenko at Fight Night 50 will be overturned.
Maldonado fought “The Last Emperor” on June 17, and surprisingly dominated the Russian heavyweight in the first round, almost finishing him more than once. Emelianenko came back to win the next two rounds, and Maldonado’s team believes the fight should have been scored a draw after such a dominant opening round.
Stefano Sartori, who manages Maldonado, reached out to MMA Fighting two days after the fight, informing that they have appealed to the Russian MMA Union. However, even before they officially contacted the entity, Union’s VP Radmir Gabdullin, who happens to be a training partner of Emelianenko, released a statement saying that it would not be overturned. According to Gabdullin, Maldonado had to appeal within 40 minutes after the event.
Following the initial response from Russian MMA Union, Maldonado’s manager reached out to World MMA Association (WMMAA), which oversees the Union, and once again appealed the result. Sartori sent WMMAA the following letter:
I am Stefano Sartori, manager of Brazilian MMA fighter Fabio Maldonado and we are writing this email to officially appeal about the result of my client fight against Fedor Emilianenko in June 17 on the Main Event of Fight Nights 50.

We were extremely surprised to have learned ….View full article
