Werdum was quick to respond to Rockhold’s recent callout, calling the former UFC middleweight champion a ‘chicken’.
While Luke Rockhold wants to move up two weight classes to take on former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, ‘Vai Cavalo’ simply isn’t interested.
Rockhold, an ex-Strikeforce and UFC middleweight champ, called out Werdum on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, telling co-hosts Tyron Woodley and Kenny Florian that he has some ‘old beef’ with Werdum from the Strikeforce days.
The Californian has been absent from competition since he lost the 185-pound title to heavy underdog Michael Bisping last year, losing — shockingly — via first-round KO.
Werdum, whose heavyweight bout with Ben Rothwell was recently scrapped due to his opponent failing an out-of-competition drug test, told MMA Fighting that he has no interest in fighting Rockhold because he’s a ‘chicken’.
“I only fight people, I don’t fight chickens,” Werdum told Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting. “He’s just promoting himself because he knows nobody is talking about him. I’m one step away from the belt. Why would I fight a chicken?”
Werdum, a multiple time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, lost the HW title to Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 but rebounded with a win over the 6 ft 7 inch Travis Browne at UFC 203.
With Rothwell out of action for the foreseeable future and Werdum seemingly uninterested in a fight with Rockhold, the 39-year-old is likely to face Alistair Overeem or Cain Velasquez in the Summer.
