UFC 216 just lost a key bout.
A heavyweight main card clash between Fabricio Werdum and Derrick Lewis has been removed from Saturday’s UFC event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., due to problems with Lewis’s back. The news was confirmed by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani shortly after UFC commentator Jon Anik tweeted out the cancellation.
“I can’t move,” Lewis told MMA Fighting. “I’m feeling the same pain in my back that I felt before the Mark Hunt fight.”
Lewis said the injury flared up after Friday’s weigh-ins. As of this morning, he was in a lot of pain and unable to move, prompting the last-minute cancellation. Lewis is hopeful that the fight will be rescheduled for UFC 217 on Nov. 4 in New York City.
The UFC has not officially announced the withdrawal and it is unknown what match will be promoted to Saturday’s main card. The event will proceed with 11 fights.
