Top prospect Alexa Grasso faced veteran Felice Herrig in a women’s strawweight contest, the featured co-main event of UFC Fight Night 104 tonight (Sat., Feb. 4, 2017) live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
The undefeated Grasso was ranked 11th in the division, coming off a successful debut against Heather Jo Clark. Herrig had won her last fight, and represented another veteran test for the rising star.
Herrig opened with pressure, putting Grasso against the cage and opened up with nice straight punching combinations. Grasso stayed patient, throwing a couple kicks but mostly staying composed. Out of nowhere, she landed a switch kick to the head as Herrig advanced, but fell to her back. She immediately went for a heel hook, then scrambled back to her feet as Herrig looked for a combination on the break. Grasso landed a side kick to the body. Herrig landed an overhand, pressing forward. Grasso attempted a spinning wheel kick that fell short. Herrig ate a jab, but threw back with a combination. Grasso was landing as well, but kept eating combinations on the counter. She got aggressive as the round ended, grabbing a clinch and landing a knee, then a hook as the referee stepped between the two fighters.
Grasso ate a big right hand at the start of round 2. Herrig was really opening with nice combinations. Grasso kept stepping in with straight shots and eating hooks in return. Grasso hit a leg kick, then a body kick. Herrig kept landing the right hand right over the top of Grasso’s jab. Grasso didn’t seem to know how to adjust, opting to stay at kicking range. As the round wound down Herrig hit a brief takedown off of one of those kicks, and they mauled each other from the clinch before Herrig threw her to the ground again. Herrig was taking it to the young prospect, and Grasso found herself up against it with a round to go.
Alexa opened with a series of kicks. Herrig shot, Alexa tried to roll through but Herrig got mount. Grasso scrambled back to her feet again almost immediately. Grasso threw a round kick, then a side kick to the body. Grasso was opening up, feeling the need to exchange. Herrig snapped her head back with a nice jab. Grasso landed a nice leg kick, then connected with a combination. She sprawled out of a takedown attempt. Herrig was slowing down a bit in the third round, and Grasso began to connect in longer combinations. Grasso buckled Herrig for a second against the cage, and they bit down and threw hard at each other through the closing bell.
In the post-fight interview, Felice Herrig dedicates the win to her deceased brother, explains that she feels like a new and improved fighter after a long layoff following her loss to Paige VanZant, and calls for either a rematch with VanZant or Michelle Waterson. Either would be great matchups, and Herrig’s future looks bright, while it’s back to the drawing board for young Alexa Grasso.
