Floyd Mayweather: I’m ‘officially out of retirement,’ but only to fight Conor McGregor

Boxing king Floyd Mayweather has officially laid down the gauntlet for a possible fight against UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

After closing the door to a long and decorated boxing career in 2015, Floyd Mayweather is willing to come back to give it one more go, and there’s only one man he’s willing to fight.

That man is UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

MMAFighting reports that during a U.K. media tour, the former boxing king broke the news that he would return to boxing if, and only if, the opponent in question was Conor McGregor. Not only that, he wants the fight to happen this summer.

From the source (via FightHype):

“I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money, about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain. Let’s fight in June. You’re the B side, I’m the A side. We’re not here to cry about money. I’m tired of all this crying about money and talking about you want to fight. You blowing smoke up everybody’s ass. If you want to fight, sign the paperwork, let’s do it.

“Today, I’m officially out of retirement for Conor McGregor. We don’t need to waste no time. We need to make this s**t happen quickly. Let’s get it on in June.”

For his part, McGregor has been angling for this possible bout for quite some time, but is currently on break while awaiting the birth of his first child. His last fight was the title win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November, and no other UFC bouts appear to be on the horizon until he returns from his hiatus.

If this bout were to take place in June, it would be Mayweather’s first fight after almost two years away from the sport. Mayweather’s welterweight and super welterweight titles were both vacated in November of 2015 by the World Boxing Council after his September 2015 win over Andre Berto, but the chance at breaking Rocky Marciano’s record (with whom he is currently tied) against an MMA fighter that has never boxed professionally could prove too great an opportunity to pass up. Well, that and the financial possibilities of an event like this.

Knowing McGregor, we should be expecting a response to this soon enough.
