Has Floyd Mayweather been gone long enough to be missed?
After all, the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world only fights once — sometimes twice — a year, and since he barely retired eight months ago, a comeback in 2016 really wouldn’t feel like retirement.
Nevertheless, “Money” says while he is currently enjoying his time off and undoubtedly spending his millions and millions of dollars, he recently said he’s been in talks to return.
“Yes, I’m happy to be where I’m at. Everyone is asking, asking me, ‘Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?’ Right now, I’m happy on this side [of the ropes], but I’ve been talking with CBS and Showtime and you just never know. But for now, I’m happy on this side,” Mayweather told Showtime’s Jim Gray (via Yahoo! Sports).
Floyd — who is sitting at a mint 49-0 — was last seen competing against Andre Berto, winning a unanimous decision (video replay here).
Nevertheless, “Money” says “crazy numbers” have been thrown his way to make a comeback.
“As of right now, you know, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way, upwards of, of course, nine figures. I’m truly blessed, way beyond belief. I don’t know what we’re going to do, but right now, I’m happy being on this side helping fighters.”
As for who could entice him to comeback, while he scoffed at fights against the seemingly unstoppable Gennady Golovkin and the rising Keith Thurman, Floyd says a potential bout against current WBC Welterweight Danny Garcia could be enticing.
“Danny Garcia, another name, undefeated prospect, undefeated champion in two different weight classes,” Mayweather said. “Very exciting fighter. You just never know.”
Still, at the end of the day, if the big wigs want to see him back in the ring, it has to make dollars and sense.
