community news, Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor on August 26? Mayweather Promotions reserves MGM Grand

Mayweather Promotions has reserved the MGM Grand for August, could that be for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor?

Could it be? Could a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor actually become official within a matter of days?

If you want to play a game of connecting dots, the Las Vegas Review-Journal published a rumor on Saturday that Mayweather vs. McGregor could be staged “sooner than you think,” indicating that running the event before September 16th would “Take some of the revenue and energy from Canelo-Triple G.”

Next up, this Instagram post from McGregor, who simply wrote that “something BIG is coming.”

There’s also this recent article showing Mayweather getting in some sparring with young boxing prospect Devin Haney, who himself is competing on June 24th.

Now for something that’s much more substantive, if you look at the Nevada Athletic Commission’s event calendar, there is a boxing card scheduled for Saturday, August 26th at the MGM Grand, where Mayweather has exclusively fought for the last ten years.

“Mayweather Promotions will promote a professional boxing event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. This event will be televised on Showtime.”

It should be noted that the UFC does not have an event of any kind scheduled for that evening. UFC president Dana White has already said that if Mayweather-McGregor does happen, it would be a regular boxing PPV staged by Mayweather Promotions.

There is, of course, the possibility that Mayweather Promotions is using that date for a regular Showtime Boxing card that’s independent of a McGregor bout, but there aren’t any known Mayweather-promoted fighters whose bouts are targeted for August 26th.

McGregor has agreed to financial terms with the UFC, but the much more important Mayweather negotiations are ongoing. If they go according to plan, then we have ourselves the big-money fight that has been the topic of discussion for more than a year.
