Stop the presses. “The Last Emperor” isn’t making bank for his highly anticipated MMA return. Everyone has Fedor fever!
That’s right. Since the former PRIDE FC heavyweight ruler and mixed martial arts (MMA) great Fedor Emelianenko announced his return to competition over the summer, and subsequently signed a reportedly lucrative contract to compete for his former promoter on a New Year’s Eve fight card in Japan, a multitude of fighters have made it known they would like their chance to tangle with “The Last Emperor.”
However, as far as numbers go, nothing is set in stone just yet, according to ex-PRIDE head honcho Nobuyuki Sakakibara.
“Information on the $ 2.5 million fee – this is absolutely not true,” Sakikabara told R-Sport (via Bloody Elbow). “I’m sure that during various negotiations with US organizations, Fedor was offered a much larger amount than our options. The return of Fedor in Japan has completely nothing to do with money, and it is a fact.”
After years of toying with the idea — and Dana White’s bankroll — of joining Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in year’s past, this would appear to be an agreement where Emelianenko can simply add to his legacy.
