Gennady Golovkin gives his take on the possible Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match.
Talks of undefeated boxing great Floyd Mayweather coming out of retirement to take on reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, in a lucrative showdown between two of the biggest draws in combat sports history, have not died down one bit. Mayweather recently said he’s coming out of retirement (for the third time), but only to fight McGregor. UFC president Dana White seems to have changed his tune on Mayweather-McGregor actually happening. McGregor just predicted that he would shock the world and KO Floyd.
In an interview with TMZ, middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin was asked for his thoughts on Mayweather vs. McGregor.
“It’s a very different situation for me and for Floyd,” Golovkin said. “Like, business fight and true fight, you know? It’s a different situation. Of course, everybody wants to watch this fight [between] Floyd and Conor because it’s a show — like a new movie, like a new show, you know? [From] my side, everybody wants to watch a true fight, true boxing fight, like history fight, you know? Different situation.”
McGregor was at the MSG Theater on Friday to support his friend Mick Conlan, the Irish Olympic boxer who won his professional debut by third-round TKO. The raucous crowd of more than 5,000 fans witnessed McGregor accompanying Conlan during his walkout, and McGregor was shouting instructions to Conlan during his bout vs. Tim Ibarra.
