Georges St Pierre officially signs new contract with UFC

After news circulated earlier this week that Georges St-Pierre and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) were close to terms on a new contract, the mixed martial arts (MMA) world was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. Now, fight fans can finally look forward to the return of “Rush” after St-Pierre officially re-signed with the promotion earlier today (Fri., Feb. 17, 2017). The news was originally reported by Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times before MMA Fighting confirmed the contract signing.

This day has been long in the making. Since his departure from the sport back in 2013, fight fans have lined up to express their interest in seeing the former UFC champion get back into the cage. Even at 35 years of age, GSP should still compete at a very high level. Having three years to regroup and heal any persisting ailments should aid his return.

St-Pierre’s signing signifies the end of a long battle between he and UFC. Remember, it wasn’t too long ago that GSP was considering bringing the promotion to court in order to settle his old contract, which he disputed because the not-so-popular Reebok deal prohibited him from reaping the benefits of lucrative sponsorship.

With an expanding division in front of him, offering new challengers like current UFC welterweight king Tyron Woodley, former training partner Stephen Thompson, former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and resilient veteran Demian Maia, GSP will have more than enough opportunities to prove he still belongs. The Canadian superstar is aiming to make a return to the Octagon in the third quarter of 2017.
