community news, Germaine de Randamie wants a rematch with Holly Holm to settle UFC 208 controversy

De Randamie is not happy with fans saying she won her belt under less than fair circumstances due to shots after the bell.

Germaine de Randamie is not happy that all these cheap shot accusations are tainting her crowning as the first UFC women’s featherweight champion.

The Dutch kickboxer took to Instagram on Monday night to argue against the notion that she’s a dirty fighter, explaining that she simply kept fighting until the referee stepped in, which is technically what the rules on when the round ends dictate.

“Woke up yesterday to a lot of support and a lot of controversy,” de Randamie wrote. “I should be on the highest of highs right now but after my long flight home to Holland, I couldn’t stop thinking about the events that took place last night and some of the critics trying to take away what should be one of the greatest moments of my career. I want to say that it was a heated battle with lots of emotion but I am not a dirty fighter. I have always trained to fight to the end or until the referee steps in. Never did I punch around or over the referee to deliver a cheap shot on Holly.”

“I have nothing but respect for Holly and the UFC,” de Randamie continued. “And because of that I want to say right now that I think I owe it to Holly and the fans to do this fight again to make sure that the winner of this historic belt is crystal clear. Holly, let’s do this again.”

Holm is also calling for a rematch, but considering Dana White’s overt disappointment in the quality of the match, I doubt we’ll be seeing one any time soon. Instead, de Randamie is almost guaranteed to face Cris Cyborg next, once Cyborg gets a retroactive Therapeutic Use Exemption from USADA for a recent failed drug test. Cyborg has claimed from the beginning that the substances found were for legitimate medical treatment of problems she had from cutting to 140 pounds twice last year. And according to White, it seems like USADA agrees with that assessment.

“It’s actually looking really good now,” said White during a recent interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “Apparently, the three [medical conditions] she has is what this medicine is used for. It’s looking really good. It was looking bad for a minute, but now it’s looking better. We’re in a good place.”

Who knows how long that will take to clear up, but it sounds like de Randamie was looking for some time off too to heal torn ligaments in her hand. Regardless, it would be shocking if the two women didn’t end up facing off before the end of the summer. As for Holly Holm? There are so few women at 145 pounds that I’m sure she and de Randamie can fight each other again, either at featherweight or back down at bantamweight where they were competing before anyways.
