Earlier this week, I asked a combat sports colleague if he was ready for Hari Sukan Nagara.
“Yeah man,” he quickly replied. “Uh … what weight class does he fight in?”
That’s when I realized that most folks in the mixed martial arts (MMA) community — particularly those on the other side of the globe — weren’t in tune with just how epic this Saturday (Oct. 10, 2015) is going to be, as Malaysia kicks off its inaugural Hari Sukan Nagara, or “National Sports Day.”
An initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Hari Sukan Nagara — held every second Saturday in October — is designed to help transform Malaysia into a sporting nation. As a result, millions of citizens are encouraged to engage in some form of game or physical activity.
After all, a healthier nation is a more prosperous nation.
To that end, most fitness clubs and local gyms will be offering free membership on Saturday, while popular sporting brands like Adidas are marking down their footwear and sports apparel. Coordinated activities like biking, running, and soccer will also be held throughout the country.
