Get results and discuss Saturday night’s HBO Boxing doubleheader, featuring Gennady Golovkin in the main event, starting at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT.
Join Bloody Elbow tonight (Saturday, May 5th) for an HBO Boxing doubleheader from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. In the main event, reigning unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) takes on short-notice replacement Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs). The co-main event is historic, as world #1 pound-for-pound Cecilia Braekhus (32-0, 9 KOs) defends all four of her welterweight titles against Kali Reis (13-6-1, 4 KO), in the first ever women’s boxing match broadcast on HBO.
This obviously isn’t the fight anyone asked for, but thanks to Canelo Alvarez’s drug test failure, this is what we get. Martirosyan hasn’t fought in two years and is a pretty good junior middleweight contender, but he’s never fought at middleweight, and certainly not against someone like Golovkin. On the other hand, he’s never been stopped before, so perhaps “GGG” might find it difficult to KO the Edmond Taverdyan trained fighter.
The IBF is not sanctioning this as a title fight, so the WBC and WBA are the only major belts on the line in the night’s headliner. Golovkin is incredibly popular in Southern California, so it should be a great atmosphere at the StubHub Center.
Bloody Elbow will have live coverage of the card starting at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT, with results and highlights to follow.
