Despite offering one of the very best second rounds you’ll ever see, Dustin Poirier’s lightweight battle with Eddie Alvarez earlier tonight (Sat., May 13, 2017) at UFC 211 from inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, ended with an unfortunate result.
After Poirier nearly put Alvarez out on his feet with devastating combinations in Round 2, Alvarez defied natural law and responded with his own fearsome offensive onslaught. After having Poirier hurt along the cage, the Philadelphia fighter landed two illegal knees that put “The Diamond” out. Referee Herb Dean reviewed the incident and remained certain that the knees were not legal.
Unfortunately for both fighters, and countless UFC fans worldwide, a cut below Poirier’s left eye prohibited him from continuing, as the former featherweight said that it felt like something was pushing up from underneath his eye. With Poirier unfit to continue fighting, Dean ruled the bout a no contest.

While neither fighter won, both Poirier and Alvarez showed tremendous skill and heart in Dallas. Poirier showcased his ability and defiance against a top-ranked lightweight, while the former UFC champion Alvarez refused to lose back-to-back fights for the first time in his storied career. The action was so fruitful that an immediate rematch seems likely heading into the summer months.
