BJ Penn made his long-awaited return to the Octagon against Yair Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 103 from inside the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, and it didn’t end well for the longtime veteran.
Yair peppered “The Prodigy” with various strikes, mixing up his punches with devastating kicks to the face and body, including some spinning and flying shit that had “Baby J” rocked early. The Hawaiian did falter, though, as he hung tough to make it past the first round.
Round two was much of the same, as “Pantera” started the round with a front kick to the face, followed by an immediate right cross that dropped “The Prodigy.” From their, the Mexican brawler — who hails from Parral, Chihuahua — followed up with some devastating ground-and-pound, battering the former two-division champion with hammer fists.
John McCarthy gave Penn the chance to fight back, but ultimately did him a favor and put an end to the punishment. While the comeback wasn’t successful for Penn, the victory wasvery impressive for Rodriguez, who saw his stock rise as a fast-rising star for the promotion.
