Holly Holm camp could file appeal with NYSAC after loss to Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208

Holly Holm came up short in her bid to become Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) first-ever women’s multi-division champion, losing to Germaine de Randamie via unanimous decision at last weekend’s (Sat., Feb. 11, 2017) UFC 208 event in what was the promotion’s inaugural women’s featherweight title fight.

The fight was marred with controversy, as some didn’t agree with the judges’ decision. Plus, some fight fans weren’t too thrilled with referee Todd Anderson, who failed to dock a point from Germaine after she clipped Holm with a shot after the bell at the conclusion of round two, leaving “The Preacher’s Daughter” on wobbly legs and without a mouthpiece.

After round three, “Iron Lady” once again threw two strikes after the bell, though they failed to connect. And once again, Anderson only warned Germaine.

Company president Dana White wasn’t thrilled with Anderson’ officiating, citing that perhaps he may have been too inexperienced to call an important title fight. According to a statement from New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) released to MMA Fighting, UFC knew in advance of all assigned officials, and they didn’t express disapproval.

“The New York State Athletic Commission maintains a roster of highly qualified referees for assignment to bouts held in New York State,” the NYSAC said through spokesperson Laz Benitez. “The Commission, as a matter of policy, shares a full list of referees and assignments with promoters well in advance of each card. This included sharing with the UFC that Mr. Anderson would referee Saturday’s main event. The UFC made no objection. The Commission strives for excellence, and will appropriately review any and all complaints lodged against any Commission licensee.”

Speaking of complaints, Holm’s manger Lenny Fresquez revealed that the team is looking at potentially filing an appeal with the commission.

“We’re definitely looking into our options,” Fresquez said. “We’re looking into the options we have with the commission. We don’t know the necessary process yet. … It’s definitely an avenue we’ll be exploring.”

For her part, de Randamie was quick to offer Holm a rematch to put any controversy to bed, leaving Cris Cyborg out in the cold for a little while.

“Preacher’s Daughter” is down, are you?
