It’s been a slow, but steady, climb up the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight ranks for one Chas Skelly (15-1). “The Scrapper” has won four straight, with three finishes in that span, but he’s yet to breakthrough into the Top 15 of the 145-pound division.
However, that could change if he beats the No. 11-ranked Darren Elkins (19-5) on the FOX Sports 1 (FS1) “Prelims” portion of the UFC 196 pay-per-view (PPV) card.
Skelly, 30, who wrestled all throughout high school and college, faces “The Damage,” who’s most known for his smothering top control and pace. MMAmania.com recently caught up with Skelly to talk about making a statement on Saturday night, if he’s surprised he hasn’t pocketed a performance bonus check, and utilizing his sense of humor in the Octagon.
So here we have one of the winningest active featherweights in UFC, how come nobody is talking about you Chas?
Skelly: I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m ugly. They like to talk about the Sage Northcutt’s of the world. Other guys like me don’t get any credit. I just have to keep winning.
Is it because you think those in the lighter weight classes are at a disadvantage?
CS: I do think that those in the lighter weight classes are at a disadvantage. With the heavier guys, there’s more of an opportunity to land one punch. People like to see that. There’s a lot more grappling in the lighter weight classes.
