Tonya Evinger’s first title defense came with an unconventional post-fight interview.
Following her bantamweight title bout in the main event of Invicta FC 17, Evinger kissed her interviewer Laura Sanko after saying she had thrown up in a bucket. Apart from that unusual moment, Evinger stated that she wasn’t happy with her performance.
Happy or not, the 34-year-old bantamweight fighter did enough to defend her belt, relying on her wrestling and ground control to outpoint Colleen Schneider all throughout the fight. Even though this was Evinger’s second fight since winning the Invicta FC bantamweight title back in July 2015, it was Evinger’s first title defense since her opponent failed to make weight in her previous trip to the cage, making the fight a non-title bout.
Now, the Invicta FC bantamweight champion is enjoying a nine-fight wining streak that sets her record to 17-6. Evinger’s last professional loss was against current UFC fighter Sarah McMann back in July 2011.
The other title fight of the night took place in the co-main event, as Livia Renata Souza defended her Invicta FC strawweight belt against former UFC fighter Angela Hill.
It was an action-packed fight that had the crowd cheering every round. In the first round of the fight, Souza found success on the ground, controlling Hill and threatening her with various submissions. However, Hill did a good job at defending Souza’s submission attempts early on and began to take control of the fight, avoiding takedowns and landing solid shots on a weary Souza.
Hill defeated Souza via split decision to become the new Invicta FC strawweight champion and earning her third straight win since her UFC release back in November 2015.
Additionally, Kaline Medeiros, Megan Anderson and Charmaine Tweet picked up impressive finishes.
