Joanna Jedrzejczyk eyes second UFC belt, show in Poland in 2017

Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has big ambitions for 2017.

Jedrzejczyk, who’s coming off a unanimous decision win over Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 205, defending her strawweight title for a fourth time, is looking to win a second UFC belt just like Conor McGregor did the night of her fight with Kowalkeiwicz. Jedrzejczyk is confident that she’s earned the opportunity to be a two-division champion, and sees that opportunity coming to fruition sometime next year.

“Sure, I think that can happen in 2017,” Jedrzejczyk told Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of The MMA Hour. “I think that I earned that, I deserved that, and I feel like I’ve gotten so much attention from the media, the international media, and from Dana [White]. I’ve put on great work again, a great fight, and I think this might happen. I’m very calm, enjoying my victory. I have some stuff to do, I’m going to enjoy my time with my family, and then, I’m going to talk to the UFC, talk to Dana, and we’ll figure out what to do.”

The belt that Jedrzejczyk has her sight set on is the 125-pound title which currently doesn’t exist in the UFC. There are currently only two women divisions in the UFC – strawweight and bantamweight. However, in June, Valerie Letourneau and Joanne Calderwood fought at flyweight at UFC Fight Night 89, marking the first women’s flyweight bout in the promotion’s history. It’s not for certain when or if the UFC will create a women’s flyweight division, but what is certain is that there’s interest from fighters and fans for more women’s divisions in the UFC.

Apart from wanting a second UFC belt, Jedrzejczyk also sees the UFC bringing an event to her home country of Poland in 2017.
