On June 18, Joanne Calderwood and Valerie Letourneau made UFC history by becoming the first fighters to compete in a women’s flyweight division bout inside the Octagon. While the 125-pound weight class has not been officially created, fighters are eyeing a future in the weight class, including strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Jedrzejczyk puts her title on the line in a rematch against Claudia Gadelha on July 8, and believes it will be the last time she faces the Brazilian.

“I think it’s going to be the last fight between me and Claudia Gadelha because I’m going to move to a different weight class, to 125, if there is an option to fight for a title,” said the Polish champion during a media conference call promoting The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale. “I want to be the first fighter hold belts in two different weight classes.”

The UFC hasn’t formally added the new weight class, but the fight promotion is considering it. Jedrzejczyk believes bringing in the flyweight division is inevitable, and wants to be the first to hold the 125-pound title.

“I know it’s going to happen. That’s it. It was a good fight between Valerie and Jo Jo, the first fight at 125. I think we need that division. So many people at bantamweight can go down and from the strawweight division can go up. The UFC should make the next division the flyweight division,” she said.
