John Teixeira is counting on a shot at the Bellator featherweight gold after he faces Daniel Weichel in the co-main event of Friday night’s Bellator 177 card in Budapest, Hungary.

Unbeaten in his last 10 MMA bouts, including four fights under the Bellator banner, “Macapa” told MMA Fighting that his clash with Weichel will determine the next in line for the promotion’s 145-pound belt.

“It was agreed (with Bellator) that the winner of this fight will be the next title contender, so I worked hard to win this fight,” Teixeira said. “I worked really hard, focused on his game, to get the victory and become the next contender. I’m even hungrier now. I’ve been working hard for a long time to achieve this dream. On April 14, I’ll defeat him and become the next challenger.”

Teixeira is 4-0 inside the Bellator cage with four decision victories, but vows to put an end to his decision streak in Budapest.

“My four fights in Bellator were decisions, but I worked hard to not let it go to the judges,” Teixeira said. “I want to end this fight with a knockout or a submission.

“The less complicated path to the victory will be to keep it standing,” he continued, “but that doesn’t mean I will avoid going to the ground with him. Of course not. Wherever the fight goes, I’ll fight him. On the ground or standing, I’ll do my best.”

The featherweight title will be on the line at Bellator 178 on April 21, when champion Daniel Straus battles Patricio Freire for the fourth time.

Teixeira, who was scheduled to face his countrymen last year but had to pull out due to an injury, saw “Pitbull” doubt that he was actually injured. But despite the animosity that exists between them, “Macapa” has no preference on who he wants to take on next.

“My focus is the belt, it doesn’t matter who holds it,” Teixeira said. “People say whatever they want, do whatever they want. He said what he wanted. I won’t lie, I was upset, but it’s in the past.

“I don’t care too much about what people say. I think about myself, my training, and not on what anyone else says or thinks. I’ll be ready to fight whoever has the belt. My focus is the belt, not Patricio or Daniel Straus.”
