Everybody was shocked when Ronda Rousey got blasted in the face by Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 en route to losing her return to the Octagon in an astonishing 48 seconds. Few people believed that Rousey was still invincible after losing to Holly Holm back at UFC 193, but many figured she’d give Nunes a little more run for her money. Like many of the fight fans who shelled out hard dough to watch the main event contest, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) commentator Jon Anik was caught off guard. In fact, the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show following Rousey’s loss was the strangest on-air moment of his entire career.
“Having to go on the air 30 seconds literally after Amanda Nunes knocked out Ronda Rousey was sort of one of the weirdest things I’ve had to do on TV,” said Anik in a recent interview with MMA Junkie Radio. “We do it all the time, we do these post-fight shows, but we knew we were going to go quickly and it was really hard to just collect my thoughts after that moment. It was just stunning the way it went down.
“You had 400-plus days of build-up for Ronda Rousey’s return only to see it come crashing down in a matter of seconds. And it came on the heels of a classic between Cody Garbrandt and Dominick Cruz that went the full 25 minutes, so you thought you were settling in for a little bit of fighting, and you didn’t get it.”
That means a lot, especially coming from someone like Anik who has been around the sport for some time now and has called countless classics. It just goes to show that even the most seasoned veterans of mixed martial arts (MMA) were stunned at how incredibly stagnant Rousey looked at UFC 207.
