Jon Jones says Anderson Silva spoke to him about how it was fighting Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.
Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones were supposed to have their grudge rematch at UFC 200 in July 2016. But when Jones failed his pre-fight drug test, he was taken off the card and was subsequently replaced by Anderson Silva with only 48 hours’ notice.
“DC” and “Bones” are now rescheduled to finally face each other again on Saturday as the headliners of UFC 214. During their pre-fight media conference call on Monday, Jones revealed that he had previously spoken with Silva regarding the Cormier fight.
“He said, ‘It was almost surprising to feel the level of fear I felt from Daniel,'” Jones said (transcript via FloCombat). “He said to me, ‘I’m an old man now, and Daniel had to take me down round after round because I felt fear coming off of him. This man has fear in his heart.’”
Jones has been vocal about his admiration for Silva, and the two men are known to be in great terms. Ultimately, Silva’s advice as an established elite fighter and former long-time champion to a younger fighter in Jones was simple and straightforward.
“He said, ‘Know what you’re capable of. Go out there and you take this from him,’” Jones recalled. “In a roundabout way, that’s what he said.”
Cormier vs. Jones 2 is one of the three slated title fights for the July 29th card at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
