Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva entered his 44th professional fight two weeks ago at UFC 234 to face the younger, undefeated Israel Adesanya. “The Spider” ended up losing via unanimous decision, but was able to show that he is still capable of going against today’s elite contenders.
One of those who lauded the 43-year-old Silva for his performance that night was friend and long-time fan Jon Jones.
“That loss against Israel I think was great for his stock,” Jones told MMAjunkie. “As an Anderson Silva fan, would I like to see him get his hand raised? Absolutely. But hats off to Israel for being so exciting and keeping the fans excited and having his own torch.
“As an Anderson Silva fan, that’s exactly what we want to see. That was so beautiful. I’m so proud of him.”
Silva chose to stand and trade shots for the majority of the 15-minute fight, which greatly impressed Jones considering how much of a prolific striker Adesanya is, as well.
“I’m so proud of Anderson in his last fight. He did so well. I am so proud of him,” Jones said. “He has nothing to be ashamed about. He went against a young, hungry challenger, and he just proved his greatness. That performance, to me, was nothing short of great.
“To go in a stand-up battle against Israel at Anderson’s age and with the injury he experienced, that just proves his greatness. He’s amazing.”
Silva will spring back into action after UFC 234, and is booked to face Jared Cannonier at UFC 237 on May 11th in Rio de Janeiro.
