It’s not like Jon Jones regrets the idea of using male enhancement pills in and of itself. The former UFC light heavyweight champion has used them on several occasions and maintains to this day he enjoys the experience.
“I have been in the UFC many, many years, and I have taken sex pills several times throughout my adult life,” Jones said at a Friday press conference in Buffalo before UFC 210. “Highly recommend it, guys. f**king great. It’s awesome.”
The problem, of course, is that for most of his career such pills weren’t against the rules, or at least they didn’t have banned substances in them. But now, with USADA as the UFC’s anti-doping partner, things are far more stringent.
And Jones, who was suspended for a year after testing for what he refers to as “dick pills” in the leadup to what was supposed to be his UFC 200 fight with Daniel Cormier, says he that he regrets not being as thorough as he could about the new regulations. Jones tested positive for the anti-estrogen agents clomiphene and Letrozol last July.
“I probably should have taken the rules a lot more seriously and literally had everything tested. I just figured it wasn’t needed because it had nothing to do with sport performance,” Jones said. “I take USADA very seriously now, I send them everything and tell them where I am going to be.”
While Jones, who comes off suspension in July, has had well-documented troubles outside the cage, he says he prides himself in being a clean competitor once he steps into the age, and hopes to regain the trust of the fans when he returns.
The arbitrators in his doping case ruled that Jones was negligent, but did not believe he intentionally took performance-enhancing drugs. However, they found that he was so reckless in taking the substances, without checking on them, that they recommended he get the maximum one-year suspension anyway.
“I have never cheated this sport,” Jones said. “Every ounce of my success has been from hard work, dedication, focus and a lot of times grittiness. I’m not worried about it following me forever because I believe that the fans will see what happened in the situation.”
