A welterweight tilt pitting returning veteran Jordan Mein against American up-and-comer Belal Muhammad has been slotted for July 8 at UFC 213. The Calgary Herald first reported the booking on Thursday.
Mein (29-11) is looking to get back into the win column after his return from retirement ended in a unanimous decision loss to Emil Weber Meek at UFC 206.
Prior to his exit from the sport, the 27-year-old Mein ripped through a 3-2 Octagon run highlighted by first-round knockouts of Mike Pyle and Dan Miller, as well as a ‘Fight of the Night’ loss to welterweight contender Matt Brown. Despite his young age, Mein has been fighting for well over a decade, facing the likes of Rory MacDonald and Tyron Woodley over the course of his extensive career.
He’ll now look to take on Muhammad (11-2), a 28-year-old welterweight who has alternated wins and losses since arriving to the UFC as a 9-0 prospect in mid-2016.
After falling short against Alan Jouban in his short-notice UFC debut — a debut that took ‘Fight of the Night’ honors — Muhammad has sandwiched wins over Augusto Montano and Lookin’ for a Fight alum Randy Brown between a first-round TKO loss to Vicente Luque.
UFC 213 takes place during International Fight Week on July 8 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is headlined by a pair of title fights, as UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes looks to defend her belt in a rematch against Valentina Shevchenko, and top middleweight contenders Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker collide in an interim title clash.
