Jorge Masvidal is feeling the love with the new UFC ownership.
The long-time UFC lightweight, and now welterweight has been getting something he wasn’t fully getting before with old UFC regimen – big name and ranked opponents. Just last week, Masvidal was booked to fight top-5 welterweight and fan favorite fighter Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 23, and said it was the new UFC owner, Ari Emanuel, who hooked it up with the high-profile fight.
“They gave me the fight, and I want to send a shout out to Ari real quick because he made this possible as well,” Masvidal told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Ari stepped in back stage and showed a lot of love, so I want to give a shout out to Ari for hooking it up. I’m cool with him, he’s a good dude. We had a little talk, and you know, he’s a cool ass dude, bro.”
Many fighters such as Conor McGregor, Cole Miller and more have expressed discontent by the lack of communication from the new UFC ownership, and many have also shown dissatisfaction with the way the company is now running the matchmaking. But for Masvidal, everything is going well.
“They’re getting a lot of heat,” Masvidal said. “A lot of people are talking about them, but so far for me, with the new regime I got Jake Ellenberger, I got Cowboy fight. I’m loving the new regime.”
Now, having already a fight booked for next year, Masvidal is looking to make 2017 the year of the ‘easy-money campaign’ and it starts with Cerrone. ‘Gamebred’ says he campaigned for the Cerrone fight because he wants to get some vengeance, as Masvidal’s original opponent for The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale, Kelvin Gastelum, was removed from their bout and given to Cerrone.
“I wanted to get a little bit of vengeance, you know,” Masvidal explained. “He took Gastelum from me, so from the start that was mainly the fire that was lit under my ass. I wanted to get my hands on him [Cerrone], and what a better way to do it than getting paid for it, you know. So I was like f*ck it, lets just call this dude out, he took my opponent anyways. And if they gave him to me, I’d get to box him up and get my revenge back.”
This fight will take place on Jan. 28 in Denver, Colo. which happens to be Cerrone’s hometown. But Masvidal couldn’t care less, as he’s been fighting in people’s backyards for years, literally.
“To fight a person like that, I knew that I was going to fight him under some special circumstance,” Masvidal said. “And I dont care, if he was from Mars, I would have been fighting him in Mars. I don’t give a f*ck. I’ve been fighting in people’s backyards my whole life. I don’t give a f*ck.”
