After losing his UFC Denver fight, Joseph Benavidez didn’t have to wait long to get a new one.
Benavidez is set to fight rising flyweight Alex Perez at The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale on Nov. 30 in Las Vegas, MMAjunkie.com reported Friday. Benavidez, a longtime 125-pound contender, was expected to face Ray Borg on Saturday, but Borg was forced off the card due to illness earlier this week.
Benavidez is coming off a close decision loss to Sergio Pettis at UFC 225 in June. The defeat snapped a six-fight winning streak, which included a win over current champ Henry Cejudo.
Perez last defeated top prospect Jose “Shorty” Torres via first-round TKO at UFC 227 in August. Perez, who made his UFC debut less than a year ago, in 3-0 in the promotion with all finishes. The Torres win extended his winning streak to eight in a row.
Despite this booking, the UFC is reportedly closing its flyweight division in the near future. A title fight between Cejudo and bantamweight titleholder T.J. Dillashaw, which could be the last flyweight fight in UFC history, is set for UFC 233 in January.
TUF 28 Finale takes place at The Pearl at The Palms and is headlined by Rafael dos Anjos vs. Kamaru Usman.
