Mixed martial arts (MMA) journeyman Josh Burkman lost his third-straight bout earlier tonight (Sat., Mar. 11, 2017) at UFC Fight Night 106 live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil, when he was rushed by Michel Prazeres, dropped by strikes and eventually tapped by a first-round choke. After the crushing defeat, Burkman left his gloves in the Octagon and informed color commentator Brian Stann that he is officially retiring.

Burkman, 36, will leave a career record of 28-15, 1 NC behind. The former Ultimate Fighter standout was given a second chance in the promotion in 2015 after a successful run in World Series of Fighting. Unfortunately, the wily veteran was only able to manage a 1-5, 1 NC record in seven Octagon appearances. He fought at welterweight and lightweight, but was unable to find much success in some fairly difficult matchups.
As a very likable character in the sport who has traveled many paths throughout his 14-year career, Burkman will be missed. After a tough string of defeats, now was probably a pretty good time to hang it up.
