Bellator women’s featherweight champion Julia Budd wants to scrap with Gabi Garcia. British Columbia’s Budd (12-2) showed no hesitation when the idea of fighting nine-time jiu-jitsu World Champion Garcia (6-0) was proposed online.
“I wanna see Bellator [featherweight] champ Budd fight Garcia for the inaugural Rizin women’s openweight belt,” a fan tweeted on Wednesday. “Two of the most badass women on the planet.” Cue Budd: “Let’s do this already.”
Budd showed no fear in challenging Garcia, despite the fact Garcia has weighed in as heavy as 237 pounds. The Canadian athlete has fought at featherweight (145 pounds) for her entire professional mixed martial arts career.
Bellator and Rizin have worked together in the past, so a potential super fight between the two promotion’s top women is not out of the question. Most recently, Bellator’s bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell travelled to Saitama, Japan to fight Kyoji Horiguchi for Rizin’s inaugural bantamweight championship. Horiguchi won that fight via third round guillotine choke.
Budd is arguably one of the best female fighters to never compete in the UFC. She is riding a 10 fight win streak and has beat notable names such as Germaine de Randamie and Marloes Coenen. Her only two professional losses are to Ronda Rousey and Amanda Nunes. The undefeated Garcia has finished all six of her wins with five coming in the first round; however, she has never faced the level of competition Budd has.
