For a while, it didn’t seem like it’d happen — but a pivotal heavyweight tilt is headed Down Under.
Former UFC champion Junior dos Santos is set to face rising star Tai Tuivasa in the UFC Fight Night 146 main event, Combate reported Thursday night. Tuivasa has called for the matchup for months, but it did not come to fruition until now. UFC officials have not yet confirmed the pairing.
Dos Santos is coming off a one-sided, unanimous-decision win over former WSOF titleholder Blagoy Ivanov earlier this summer. Prior to that, the Brazilian hadn’t fought since a May 2017 knockout loss to then-champ Stipe Miocic. He had been sidelined for over a year due to an issue with USADA, in which he failed a drug test but ended up being found at no fault.
3-0 in the UFC, Tuivasa is coming off the biggest win of his young career — a narrow decision over former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski. The Australian also holds knockout wins over Cyril Asker and Rashad Coulter in the Octagon.
UFC Fight Night 146 takes place Dec. 1 at Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Adelaide, Australia.
