Could this disaster have been avoided?

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was pulled from the UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) maine event, set to go down this Saturday night (July 9, 2016) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, after getting flagged for a potential anti-doping violation.

Read all the gory details right here.

But losing “Cormier vs. Jones 2” may not have been the devastating blow that it was had the promotion opted to retain its original main event, a big-money welterweight rematch between UFC featherweight kingpin Conor McGregor and lightweight superstar Nate Diaz.

A point the Irishman’s coach was sure to bring up on Twitter:

I wonder if there’s any regret taking him off the card over a press conference now?

Not that Plan B is all that bad.

McGregor walked off the job earlier this year because the promotion wanted him to promote, whereas “Notorious” wanted to hunker down overseas and focus solely on his mixed martial arts (MMA) training. The goal was to fix what broke in a UFC 196 loss to Diaz.

UFC wouldn’t budge and yanked him from UFC 200 altogether.

The good news is, McGregor returns at UFC 202 next month in Las Vegas. If and when Jones returns remains to be seen, but until then, Daniel Cormier remains your UFC light heavyweight champion.

Sad face and all.
