FORTALEZA, Brazil — Kelvin Gastelum believes he’s one of the best welterweights in the world, so why does he wants to stay at middleweight and face Anderson Silva next?
Right after finishing Vitor Belfort in the first round at UFC Fight Night 106 in Fortaleza, Brazil, the Kings MMA talent said he wants to continue his “legends all-whooping tour” by taking on “The Spider” at the UFC 212 event in Rio de Janeiro on June 3.
Unbeaten in middleweight fights under the UFC banner, Gastelum explained that he’s interested in facing Silva because of the attention that fight would bring him, but also to test himself against a decorated former champion.
“It’s a combination of a lot of things. (Silva) is a big name, he’s another legend, and he’s ranked above me,” Gastelum said at the post-fight press conference. “I want to keep moving up the rankings. I want a fight that will get me, that will eventually give me a title shot. If we wanna go and make it happen in June 3rd in Rio, I’d love for it to happen.”
Gastelum also made it clear what it would take for the UFC to convince him to go back to 170 pounds — a weight class he has traditionally clung to.
“It would have to me against a No. 1 contender,” he said. “I believe I’m one of the best welterweights, and if I go back down, it would have to be for a No. 1 contender fight.”
“I said I wanted to get a fight that interests me at middleweight,” he added. “If I get a fight that interests me at middleweight I’d definitely stay, and Anderson is one of those guys that would I definitely be interested to fight.”
