Kenny Florian believes McGregor’s best weapon against Mayweather is his trash talk.
We’ve got two months of build-up and hype for the boxing extravaganza between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor.
Boxing and MMA pundits give McGregor, the current UFC lightweight champion, no chance against boxing’s pound-for-pound great but Kenny Florian, a former two-time UFC title challenger, believes ‘The Notorious’ does has a path to victory — and it’s not that vaunted left hand.
Florian, a co-host of UFC Tonight, advised McGregor to get personal with Mayweather in the coming weeks. The Irishman is a master of psychological warfare and knows how to plant seeds of doubts in his opponent’s head in the pre-fight media build-up.
McGregor riled up and antagonized former featherweight champ Jose Aldo for weeks on end in the lead-up to UFC 189, and Florian believes he should do the same to Mayweather in the upcoming press conferences.
“I think honestly the best thing that Conor could do is what he does outside of the ring, outside of the cage, and that is get inside the head of Floyd Mayweather,” Florian said on the latest edition of “UFC Tonight”, per Damon Martin of FOX Sports. “Get him emotional, get him leaping in, that’s when Conor gets the knockouts.
“Everyone talks about the power of Conor, absolutely I’m sure he hits very hard, but he gets guys lunging in. He gets guys emotional. He gets them doing things they don’t normally do and that’s what he needs to do against Floyd. I don’t know if Floyd’s dealt with someone who talks trash like Conor McGregor and gets you emotional like Conor McGregor.”
Once he’s in the ring, ‘KenFlo’ thinks McGregor’s best chance is to initiate a clinch and fight rough.
“The other thing he could do is try to get nasty,” Florian said. “Get a little rough, get into the clinch, tire out those arms by doing maybe what Rocky Marciano used to do, which is beat up the arms a little bit, get those tired, clinch him up, try to tire him out.
“Do something unusual.”
Mayweather, though, is a master of defense and evasion and has proved to be too slick against some of the best boxers in the world, easily beating the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao.
Florian says McGregor needs to do his best to stop the fight early.
“If Conor’s going to get it done, it’s probably going to happen early,” he predicted.
A multi-city media tour for Mayweather-McGregor was announced last week, but no dates or venues have been set. The blockbuster fight is scheduled to take place on August 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
