Following a fourth round submission victory against Conor McGregor, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov scaled the Octagon and attacked McGregor’s teammates, which led to a chaotic brawl that closed out the UFC 229 Pay-Per-View. Now days removed from the incident, Nurmagomedov opted to reveal the reason why he lost control of himself in the immediate aftermath of the fight.
Speaking to Russian media, Nurmagomedov stated that one of McGregor’s cornermen allegedly called him a “Muslim scumbag” after the fight.
“What was the trainer of McGregor shouting? That I am a Muslim scumbag,” said Nurmagomedov. ‘I do not want to repeat.”
While Nurmagomedov did not specify which of McGregor’s trainers allegedly made the Islamophobic comment, it should be noted that the person Nurmagomedov scaled the cage to attack was McGregor’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor and Bellator fighter Dillon Danis. However, it remains unclear whether Danis was responsible for the comment.
Danis has since stated that “Khabib fans are attempting to smear me in an effort to justify his actions. I have never and would never denigrate anyone’s religion.”
UFC President Dana White stated that three of Nurmagomedov’s teammate were arrested in the aftermath of the brawl, though were released when McGregor refused to press charges. Nurmagomedov has since returned to Russia, where he commenced a victory tour that included stops in his native Dagestan before heading to Ulyushka meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
The UFC lightweight champion has not been stripped of his title, though the Nevada State Athletic Commission withheld his entire $2 million disclosed purse while they conduct an investigation into the UFC 229 brawl.
