Top-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov is still recovering from the medical issues that canceled his UFC 209 showdown against fellow title contender Tony Ferguson.
And like so many other fighters looking to make their way back to the Octagon, he’s going to be taking his sweet time. In fact, “The Eagle” doesn’t expect to compete before October, though he does expect Ferguson to be waiting for him (because of this).
From ToFight.ru (via Bloody Elbow):
“Regarding health – I have nearly completed rehabilitation. I will start to train somewhere in the middle of June. The return is planned for October because I need four months of full training. As for the match, I think, that 90 percent I will fight for the interim title. Who I’m going to fight is not yet known, but of course I will insist on a fight with Tony Ferguson because now I do not see any other contenders and I do not want to fight with anyone, but to him.”
That might require “insurance or some sort of guarantee.”
Nurmagomedov (24-0) missed two years of his prime from 2014-16 when a recurring knee issue kept him on the bench. When he’s healthy and active, he looks to be unstoppable; however, his most dangerous opponent appears to be himself.
Anyone expecting him to make the self-imposed October deadline?
