Khabib Nurmagomedov, who will face Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 on Mar. 4 for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight interim title, has been highly critical of current 155-pound champ Conor McGregor, The undefeated Russian sensation has gone out of his way to belittle the Irishman at every possible opportunity, which is exactly what he did earlier today (Fri., Feb. 10, 2017) during UFC 208’s Q&A session (watch here).
“I think if Conor has one fan, I have 20 times more fans than him,” said Nurmagomedov. “I think UFC has to make plans a little bit, because this chicken is not loyal. If you remember, the first time he fought in the UFC, and he talked like, ‘$50K baby,’ something like this. He asked Dana please give me $50K. The UFC made him. If he had never fought in the UFC, how would he have got like this?
“Now he’s talking about I can fight without the UFC in boxing, you know. For me, this is disrespectful of the UFC.”
Nurmagomedov is eluding to McGregor’s recent comments about fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. with or without the permission of UFC. UFC president Dana White has labeled McGregor’s recent moves as a potentially epic fall, but leave it up to “The Eagle” to put McGregor in place before the wheels come off.
“I wanted to say to the UFC, I can help these guys,” said Nurmagomedov. “We can make the other guy humble, because we remember how he asked for $50,000. Now he talking about he can make this [Mayweather] fight without the UFC. I don’t worry about my PR, because in Dagestan and Russia, I’m a bit worried about how I become popular because before I never feel this pressure. And that’s why I don’t think about this.
“But why not, we can make this guy humble. Smash this guy if the UFC wants.”
If Nurmagomedov can get past a streaking “El Cucuy” at UFC 209, a title unification bout with McGregor would come to fruition sometime in 2017, unless the Irishman takes more time off to actually fight Mayweather. Either way, the Russian beater has one more lightweight to destroy before parking his keister on McGregor’s front doorstep.
