We now know what caused popular featherweight Chan Sung Jung to step aside from his anticipated UFC 214 fight with Ricardo Lamas.
Word surfaced Friday, initially reported by MMA analyst Robin Black, that “The Korean Zombie” had to pull out of the Aug. 29 fight due to an undisclosed injury. MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani has confirmed the withdrawal and learned that a knee injury was the cause of the change in plans.
Admired by fans for his exciting fight style, Jung (14-4) has not been able to compete nearly as much as he might like in recent years. Jung had to pull out of multiple fights due to injury, and also had to serve a compulsory two-year stint in the South Korean military. He returned from his military service and knocked out Dennis Bermudez in the main event of UFC Fight Night 104 in February.
This is the second time a Lamas vs. Jung fight has fallen out, as the two were scheduled to meet at UFC 162 before Jung was removed by the UFC to fight Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 163. The UFC is expected to try finding another opponent for Lamas (17-5), who has won three of his past five fights.
