Knee injury sits UFC champ Demetrious Johnson until spring 2017

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight titleholder Demetrious Johnson is going to be out of action for the next few months following a knee injury suffered in his unanimous decision win over Tim Elliott, which came in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 24 main event earlier this month in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The good news? His popliteus tear will not require surgery.

“I am going to let this heal and not rush back in there,” Johnson told MMAFighting.com. “Maybe April or May, but if my injury needs more time, I’ll let it heal.”

He can afford the time off.

That’s because “Mighty Mouse” (25-2-1) has pretty much cleaned out the 125-pound division. No. 4-ranked Jussier da Silva remains a potential contender, but with losses to Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo, “Formiga” will need to string together a few wins to make that happen.
